Jeff Spicer Announces Campaign for Missouri House District 20

“A Working Voice for Working People”

Independence, MO — Lifelong Independence resident and labor leader Jeff Spicer announced today his candidacy for the Missouri House of Representatives in District 20. With nearly 30 years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic and labor manager, Spicer is stepping forward to bring the voice of working families to Jefferson City.

“I’ve spent my career standing alongside working families, and now I’m stepping forward to make sure Independence finally has a voice in the Capitol that delivers real results,” said Spicer. “I’m not interested in being a warm body for a political party. I’m running to get things done for our community—no matter who I have to work with to make it happen.”

Spicer’s campaign focuses on six core priorities that put working families first:

  • Safe Communities: Build career pipelines in high schools for firefighting, EMS, and law enforcement; invest in training; and ensure accountability across the justice system so victims are protected and communities trust the process.

  • Strengthen Education: Keep public tax dollars in public schools, invest in teachers, expand access to childcare and school meals, and improve Missouri’s standing in education—where the state currently ranks 30th overall and 49th in teacher pay.

  • Working Families First: Stand up for fair pay, good benefits, and stable jobs; defend workers’ rights like paid sick leave; and attract new businesses that create local jobs close to home.

  • Lower Costs & Tax Burden: Use Missouri’s budget surplus wisely to ease tax burdens on families and push back on big banks and investment firms that are driving up housing prices.

  • Government that Works: Cut red tape so people get services faster, hold politicians accountable for results, and keep lobbyists and corporate interests from controlling decisions in Jefferson City.

  • Protecting Missouri’s Future: Safeguard water, farmland, and natural resources from corporate abuse, support clean and safe communities, and protect conservation funding for future generations.

Spicer emphasized a sharp contrast with incumbent Mike Steinmeyer (R), who was elected in 2024 but, according to Spicer, has not attempted to deliver meaningful results for the district.

“People are tired of hearing big promises that never turn into progress,” Spicer said. “I’ll be present, communicative, and accountable. You shouldn’t only hear from your representative when they’re asking for your vote—you should hear from them all year long.”
